Thymosin beta-4 is a separate 43-residue peptide that binds actin and participates in cell migration; it shares no sequence similarity with thymosin alpha-1 despite the common family name. Other preparative materials, such as thymosin fraction 5 and thymopoietin, contain distinct mixtures or peptides. The shared thymosin label reflects the tissue of origin used in early purification, not a common structural core. Treating these molecules as interchangeable is a frequent source of confusion in laboratory reports and in popular summaries alike.
Thymosin alpha-1 is a synthetic peptide of 28 amino acid residues that corresponds to a naturally occurring fragment first isolated from thymus tissue. Its chain is acetylated at the amino terminus, a modification that shields the peptide from rapid cleavage by aminopeptidases. The molecule carries a net negative charge at physiological pH and dissolves freely in water. Researchers classify it as an immune-modulating agent rather than a classical hormone, because it acts on several cell types of both the innate and the adaptive immune system.
The peptide was identified during work in the 1970s on thymosin fraction 5, a partially purified extract of calf thymus. Investigators separated that mixture and characterized individual components, one of which they named thymosin alpha-1. The same compound later received the international nonproprietary name thymalfasin. Commercial material is produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis rather than by extraction, so synthetic and natural forms share an identical sequence. Naming conventions vary across the literature, and readers should distinguish the alpha-1 peptide from other thymosins that have unrelated sequences and functions.

Plaid Cymru expels Senedd member Rhys ab Owen after he was found to have inappropriately touched and sworn at two women while drunk at a party. Former Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi, who stood down from Parliament at the general election, is reported to be seeking financial backers in order to bid for the Daily Telegraph and The Spectator. 23 July – Seven Labour MPs, including former shadow chancellor John McDonnell and former shadow minister Rebecca Long-Bailey, have the Labour whip suspended for six months after voting against the government and in favour of an SNP amendment to scrap the two-child benefit cap. McDonnel said, "I'm following Keir Starmer's example as he said put country before party". The Home Office confirms that contract for the Bibby Stockholm, the vessel used to house asylum seekers, will not be renewed after January 2025. Documents released by The National Archives reveal that former prime minister Harold Wilson agreed to sell his private papers late in life in order to provide funds for his care. A deal agreed with Canada's McMaster University in 1990 attracted concern from the Cabinet Office because documents relating to his time in office remained private under the thirty year rule, which would not apply if they went to Canada. They were eventually sold to Oxford's Bodleian Library. 2024 Conservative Party leadership election: James Cleverly, who served as home secretary and foreign secretary in the Sunak government, announces his intention to run for the post of Conservative Party leader. 24 July – Starmer attends his first PMQs as prime minister.
Plutonium (specifically, plutonium-238) was first produced, isolated, and then chemically identified between December 1940 and February 1941 by Glenn T. Seaborg, Edwin McMillan, Emilio Segrè, Joseph W. Kennedy, and Arthur Wahl by deuteron bombardment of uranium in the 60-inch (150 cm) cyclotron at the Berkeley Radiation Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley. Neptunium-238 was created directly by the bombardment but decayed by beta emission with a half-life of a little over two days, which indicated the formation of element 94. The first bombardment took place on December 14, 1940, and the new element was first identified through oxidation on the night of February 23–24, 1941. A paper documenting the discovery was prepared by the team and sent to the journal Physical Review in March 1941, but publication was delayed until a year after the end of World War II due to security concerns. At the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, Egon Bretscher and Norman Feather realized that a slow neutron reactor fuelled with uranium would theoretically produce substantial amounts of plutonium-239 as a by-product. They calculated that element 94 would be fissile, and had the added advantage of being chemically different from uranium, and could easily be separated from it. McMillan had recently named the first transuranic element neptunium after the planet Neptune, and suggested that element 94, being the next element in the series, be named for what was then considered the next planet, Pluto.
It functions specifically function in the G protein signaling pathway through G protein, which is a transmembrane protein that causes the cascade phosphorylation. It is located throughout the entire length of intestine while PHI is mostly concentrated in the colon region.
== Modern era == Further evidence of the threat that lead posed to humans was discovered in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Mechanisms of harm were better understood, lead blindness was documented, and the element was phased out of public use in the United States and Europe. The United Kingdom introduced mandatory factory inspections in 1878 and appointed the first Medical Inspector of Factories in 1898; as a result, a 25-fold decrease in lead poisoning incidents from 1900 to 1944 was reported. Most European countries banned lead paint—commonly used because of its opacity and water resistance—for interiors by 1930. The last major human exposure to lead was the addition of tetraethyllead to gasoline as an antiknock agent, a practice that originated in the United States in 1921. It was phased out in the United States and the European Union by 2000. In the 1970s, the United States and Western European countries introduced legislation to reduce lead air pollution. The impact was significant: while a study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States in 1976–1980 showed that 77.8% of the population had elevated blood lead levels, in 1991–1994, a study by the same institute showed the share of people with such high levels dropped to 2.2%. The main product made of lead by the end of the 20th century was the lead–acid battery. From 1960 to 1990, lead output in the Western Bloc grew by about 31%.
== Morphology == Brucella canis are non-motile organisms and cannot move independently due to the absence of flagella. Brucella are also non-encapsulated, non-spore forming bacteria that replicate in the ER of their host cells. The bacteria are Gram-negative coccobacilli or short rods measuring 0.6 to 1.5 μm long, and 0.5 to 0.7 μm wide, do not have a capsule, do not form spores, and are aerobic. On blood or chocolate agar, colonies are small (~0.5-2 mm after 48-72 hours), convex, non-hemolytic and non-pigmented. Often B. canis colonies can present themselves as rough variants, a reflection of their naturally rough lipopolysaccharide (LPS) phenotype. The optimal growth temperature for B. canis is 37°C, but growth is still possible within the range from 20°C to 40°C. Additionally, the pH range in which B. canis grows most effectively is from pH 6.6-7.4, making this organism neutrophilic in nature. Brucella species, specifically B. canis, possess a highly specialized outer cell envelope characterized by an atypical profile of membrane lipids. Their outer membrane contains very-long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) and modified lipid A structures that differ markedly from traditional Gram-negative bacteria. Importantly, B. canis is a "natural rough" Brucella. Its Lipopolysaccharide lacks the O-polysaccharide that is present in smooth strains; an envelope trait that influences colony phenotype and host interaction without implying a-virulence. B.

== Interactions == A combination of ACE inhibitor with other drugs may increase effects of these drugs, but also the risk of adverse effects. Commonly reported adverse effects of drug combination with ACE inhibitor are acute renal failure, hypotension, and hyperkalemia. Drugs interacting with ACE inhibitor should be prescribed with caution. Special attention should be given to combinations of ACE inhibitor with diuretics (especially potassium-sparing diuretics), NSAIDs, anticoagulants, cyclosporine, DPP-4 inhibitors, and potassium supplements Angiotensin II receptor antagonists (ARBs) should not be used with ACE inhibitors. Dual RAAS inhibitor therapy (ACE inhbitors, ARBs, direct renin inhibitors, or mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists) has been found to significantly increase the risk of developing kidney damage and hyperkalemia. Potassium supplementation should be used with caution and under medical supervision owing to the hyperkalemic effect of ACE inhibitors. Concomitant use with cyclooxygenase inhibitors tends to decrease ACE inhibitor's hypotensive effect.
=== Stress === Smokers report higher levels of everyday stress. Several studies have monitored feelings of stress over time and found reduced stress after quitting. The deleterious mood effects of everyday between-cigarette nicotine withdrawal symptoms explain why people who smoke experience more daily stress than non-smokers, and become less stressed when they quit smoking. Deprivation reversal also explains much of the arousal data, with deprived smokers being less vigilant and less alert than non-deprived smokers or non-smokers. Recent studies have shown a positive relationship between psychological distress and salivary cotinine levels in smoking and non-smoking adults, indicating that both first-hand and second-hand smoke exposure may lead to higher levels of mental stress.
=== 27 April === A Moscow court fined the Wikimedia Foundation, the hosting platform for Wikipedia, two million roubles. This is the seventh fine since 2023 by a Russian court. The latest fine was for a failure to remove an article from Wikipedia that contains "classified military information" about the war in Ukraine. Russian digital affairs minister Maksut Shadaev told Interfax "We are not blocking Wikipedia yet, there are no such plans for now." Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary General of NATO, announced that since the start of the war NATO had provided Ukraine with anti-aircraft weapon systems, some MiG-29 aircraft, 230 tanks and 1550 other armored vehicles, which makes up 98% of the previously promised aid in armored vehicles. He said that NATO had trained enough Ukrainians to assemble 9 new armored brigades, which put Ukraine in a strong position to recapture occupied territories. Melitopol's chief of police, Oleksandr Mishchenko, was killed by an Improvised explosive device. He had been collaborating with the Russian forces since they captured the city. Another police officer was killed and one more wounded. The attack was blamed on Ukrainian partisans. It was reported that a military projectile had been discovered in a forest close to the village of Zamosc near Bydgoszcz, Poland. It was later identified as a Russian Kh-55 missile. According to Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto, the Russian Central Bank had frozen the bank accounts of the Finnish Embassy in Moscow and the Finnish consulate in Saint Petersburg.
=== Medicinal === For the Nuba tribe of Sudan, scars can serve a medicinal purpose; scars above the eyes are believed to improve eyesight, and scars on the temples are believed to help relieve headaches. In some cultures, scarification is used in traditional medicine to treat some illness by inserting medicine (usually herbs or powdered root) under the skin to heal a variety of infections and illnesses such as Malaria.
== Biomarkers of disease == It is important to acknowledge the biomarkers of third-hand smoke because they theoretically indicate the severity and presence of disease. In a recent study involving mice, THS biomarkers were discovered after four weeks of initial exposure at equivalent levels to those found in the homes of people who smoke. Researchers used a system that mimicked exposure to humans and sought out biomarkers found in serum, liver, and brain tissues in the mice. The mice were then exposed to THS at varying months and as early as one month, they began to show signs of increased circulating inflammatory cytokines, tumor necrosis factor, granulocyte macrophage colony stimulating factor, and an increase in the stress hormone epinephrine. Damage from THS exposure continued after two, four, and six months. Such damages included oxidative stress and molecular damage. In a small controlled study of healthy nonsmoking adults, acute dermal exposure to third-hand smoke increased urinary biomarkers of oxidative damage to DNA, lipids and proteins and altered the plasma proteome in a pattern similar to that observed in cigarette smokers, including activation of pathways associated with inflammatory skin disease. Some of the mice also became hyperglycemic and hyperinsulinimic, which could mean that insulin resistance could be a consequence of long-term exposure. This study implies that increased exposure time to THS can have dramatic effects.

Although Ginkgo biloba and other species of the genus were once widespread throughout the world, its habitat had shrunk by two million years ago. For centuries, it was thought to be extinct in the wild, but is now a common tree cultivated throughout eastern China, Korea, and Japan. Many municipalities in China, Korea and Japan use ginkgos as street trees, and ginkgo leaves are the emblem of prominent educational institutions such as the University of Tokyo and Sungkyunkwan University in South Korea. Despite their widespread habitat, high genetic uniformity exists among ginkgo trees, with some Chinese scholars suggesting that ginkgo trees in these areas may have been planted and preserved by Chinese monks over about 1,000 years. A study demonstrates a greater genetic diversity in Southwestern China populations, supporting glacial refugia in mountains surrounding the eastern Tibetan Plateau, where several old-growth candidates for wild populations have been reported. Whether native ginkgo populations still exist has not been demonstrated unequivocally, but there is genetic evidence that these Southwestern populations may be wild, as well as evidence that the largest and oldest G. biloba trees may be older than surrounding human settlements. Where it occurs in the wild, Ginkgo is found infrequently in deciduous forests and valleys on acidic loess (i.e. fine, silty soil) with good drainage. The soil it inhabits is typically in the pH range of 5.0 to 5.5.
In medicine, myopathy is a disease of the muscle in which the muscle fibers do not function properly. Myopathy means muscle disease (Greek : myo- muscle + patheia -pathy : suffering). This meaning implies that the primary defect is within the muscle, as opposed to the nerves ("neuropathies" or "neurogenic" disorders) or elsewhere (e.g., the brain). This muscular defect typically results in myalgia (muscle pain), muscle weakness (reduced muscle force), or premature muscle fatigue (initially normal, but declining muscle force). Muscle cramps, stiffness, spasm, and contracture can also be associated with myopathy. Myopathy experienced over a long period (chronic) may result in the muscle becoming an abnormal size, such as muscle atrophy (abnormally small) or a pseudoathletic appearance (abnormally large). Capture myopathy can occur in wild or captive animals, such as deer and kangaroos, and leads to morbidity and mortality. It usually occurs as a result of stress and physical exertion during capture and restraint. Muscular disease can be classified as neuromuscular or musculoskeletal in nature. Different myopathies may be inherited, infectious, non-communicable, or idiopathic (cause unknown). The disease may be isolated to affecting only muscle (pure myopathy), or may be part of a systemic disease as is typical in mitochondrial myopathies.
Also in 2005, United States and India signed a ten-year defense framework agreement, with the goal of expanding bilateral security cooperation. The two countries engaged in numerous and unprecedented combined military exercises, and major US arms sales to India were concluded. An Open Skies Agreement was signed in April 2005, enhancing trade, tourism, and business via the increased number of flights, and Air India purchased 68 US Boeing aircraft at a cost of $8 billion. The United States and India also signed a bilateral Agreement on Science and Technology Cooperation in 2005. After Hurricane Katrina, India donated $5 million to the American Red Cross and sent two planeloads of relief supplies and materials to help. Then, on 1 March 2006, President Bush made another diplomatic visit to further expand relations between India and the U.S. The value of all bilateral trade tripled from 2004 to 2008 and continued to grow, while significant two-way investment also grows and flourishes. The political influence of a large Indian-American community is reflected in the largest country-specific caucus in the United States Congress, while between 2009 and 2010 more than 100,000 Indian students have attended American colleges and universities. In November 2010, President Barack Obama visited India and addressed a joint session of the Indian Parliament, where he backed India's bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
== Neuron-intrinsic changes == Immediately following injury, neurons undergo a large number of transcriptional and proteomic changes which switch the cell from a mature, synaptically active neuron to a synaptically silent, growth state. This process is dependent on new transcription, as blocking the ability of cells to transcribe new mRNA severely impairs regeneration. A number of signaling pathways have been shown to be turned on by axon injury and help to enable long distance regeneration including BMP, TGFβ, and MAPKs. Similarly, a growing number of transcription factors also boost the regenerative capacity of peripheral neurons including ASCL1, ATF3, CREB1, HIF1α, JUN, KLF6, KLF7, MYC, SMAD1, SMAD2, SMAD3, SOX11, SRF, STAT3, TP53, and XBP1. Several of these can also boost the regenerative capacity of CNS neurons, making them potential therapeutic targets for treating spinal cord injury and stroke.
